The recently completed modular project in the city of Ghent, was an assignment from VMSW – Vlaamse Maatschappij voor Sociaal Wonen to build a modular emergency village for 400 temporarily displaced Ukrainian refugees.
In our quest to redefine emergency housing, UAU Collectiv aimed to understand and address the unique needs of those temporarily displaced. Our research highlighted the necessity for environments that offer more than just functionality, emphasizing community and normalcy during crises. We committed to human-centered design, creating spaces that prioritize comfort, safety, and belonging.
The masterplan layout moves away from the traditional, utilitarian emergency village model, offering nurturing and flexible design. Central to our vision are two adaptable modules: “Type A” and “Type B,” designed to accommodate a range of living situations, from individual studios to family homes. These units are the building blocks of a community layout that promotes interaction, privacy, and a seamless blend with the natural environment.
By thoughtfully arranging the modules, we create a vibrant village atmosphere characterized by common areas and green spaces that promote community living and individual well-being. Our design philosophy extends to the future adaptability of these modules, ensuring that they can be reconfigured to meet evolving needs and contexts.
